India Arrests Prominent Kashmiri Activist

India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a prominent human rights activist Khurram Parvez under a draconian anti-terrorism law.

Indian authorities accused Parvez of ‘terror funding’ and ‘conspiracy.’ The charges make it nearly impossible to get bail. The U-N has condemned the arrest saying ‘he is not a terrorist.

Who is Khurram Parvez?

Parvez has long been a staunch critic of Prime Minister Narendra MoModi’sovernment. He had published several reports on human rights violations committed by Indian forces in occupied Jammu and Kashmir. He is also the chairperson of the Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances (AFAD). It is an international rights organization that looks into the forced disappearances in Kashmir and elsewhere in Asia.

International community reacts to activist asrrest

PaParvez’srrest has caused global outrage. Activists and social media users have dubbed the move as India’s attempt to silence dissent and punish human rights defenders. After the UN, Amnesty International also criticized India for using so-called anti-terror laws for criminalizing human rights work.

This is not the first time Indian authorities arrested Parvez. He had spent 76 days in prison in 2016.

The arrest comes when tensions are already mounting in the occupied valley over the murder of two civilians at the hands of security forces.
